Wates and Europe fostered a continuous exchange of ideas, and by the 1890s American designers were making significant contributions to art nouveau ceramics, glassware, and architecture. International expositions in the United States not only highlighted American products but also attracted European visitors who were curious about design trends emerging in this new marketplace. Foremost among ss artist Ferdinand Hodler, but later, under the influence of French artists Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, and especially Henri Rousseau, his work began to display a new freedom and playful romanticism. These tendencies are evident in Rubin’s The Family (1927, Tel Aviv Museum), an early work painted in flat, bright colors that shows a traditionally clothed Israeli family at home, set against a landscape of fields and trees.
