Yrra cotta, Sullivan’s ornamentation is based on plantlike forms and patterns of complex, interlocking lines. Art nouveau represents the beginning of modernism in design ( see Modern Architecture). It occurred at a time when mass-produced consumer goods began to fill the marketplac their counterparts elsewhere in Europe, Secession designers rejected historical styles; but in Vienna they expressed this through an increasing simplification of form.
